Philoptochos News

Dear Parishioners,

On behalf of Saint Irenes’ Philoptochos Society, I wish the entire community health and happiness in 2020.   Keeping up with tradition, our Philoptochos hosted the Annual Vasilopita cutting for our community. Wishing all who received the New Year’s coin health and blessings.

The month of January sparks our annual Philoptochos Stewardship Drive.  We hope to inspire you to join our organization and help us to fulfill our Christian duty to help the poor, the hungry, the afflicted, and those in need.  Philoptochos Membership is open to all Orthodox Christian Woman over the age of 18.  We welcome Men to join with associate-memberships.

Together with our Sunday School Students, Sunday School Teachers, Our Goyans, the GOYA Advisors, and the Philoptochos, we shared our Christian Love and Fellowship with the residence of Saint Michaels Home for the Aged in Yonkers, NY.  We were wonderfully represented by visitors of all ages.  We visited with the residents, distributed Christmas Gifts, and sang the Kalanta and the residents serenaded us with beautiful songs from their youth.   We witnessed “Kefi” amongst a few of the residents, who got-up and treated us to heartfelt and inspired dancing.

Our Philoptochos participated in the feast of St. Athanasios with Vespers on January 17th and Liturgy on the 18th, by hosting receptions after both services.   We were happy to have His Eminence Archbishop Evangelos celebrate Liturgy with us, on the 18th.   I would like to thank all the community members who helped on these two days. Our heartfelt thanks to;  Mr. Elias Economidis, who donated his time to prepare delicious meals for us; and to MBH Meat Purveyors and the Tom Sawyer Diner for their generous donations.

On February 25 we joined our sister chapters of Tenafly, Clifton and Fairview in feeding the homeless in New York’s Penn Station. We fed 150 people. What an experience it was. Homelessness has become an epidemic in the tri-state area as well as around the country.

We are busy preparing for our annual Tricky Tray on Tuesday, March 10 at our Community Center.  Please come out and support our efforts.  We have been busy collecting and packaging enticing prizes.

We are also looking forward to marching in our annual Greek Parade on March 29 in New York City.  Hope to see many parishioners young and old there to celebrate our Hellenic heritage.
