Greek Dance

The Junior Greek Dance Group of St. Athanasios has had a wonderful year, learning a variety of dances from different regions of Greece.  The children, ages 5 to 11, have been under the instruction of our talented dance teacher, Angelo Gergatsoulis, learning the Hasaposerviko, Kalamatiano, Karagouna, Syrto and Tsamiko.  Our younger dancers in Group 1 also learned the Hasapiko, Ballo, Podaraki, and Palamakia, while our older dancers in Group 2 learned the Zonaradiko, Antipatiti, Rouga, Soufliotouda, Kotsari, Pidikto, Stamoulou, Pyrgousiko, Pentozali, and Malevizioti.   The dancers performed at the Oxi Day and Independence Day celebrations this year, and our thanks to Greek School Principal Sophia Stamatiou for including the dancers in these programs. The dancers also performed beautifully at the St. Athanasios Festival.  We are so proud of their accomplishments – Bravo Paidia!  And thank you Angelo!

We are pleased that our dance group experienced a large increase in enrollment this year.  A very special thank you to Ms. Efterpi Paul for her generous donation of time and effort to sew additional sashes to accommodate all of our children, and to Despina Anastasopoulos for procuring the material.  Special thanks also to Melanie Marcus for coordinating the group with me, to the great group of moms who provided their assistance on a weekly basis, as well as to Jennie Koutsouras for her assistance with the children in the class.  We also wish to thank Father Anargyros, Tina Nicholas, and Andy Hios for their support throughout the year.

Enrollment for the 2016-2017 dance year will be held in September during Greek School and Sunday School registrations.  Classes will be held on Friday afternoons, starting September 16, 2016.
