Philoptochos News

Dear Parishioners,

On behalf of St. Irenes’ Philoptochos Society, we wish you and your families Kali Sarakosti! We are still in the midst of our membership drive and encourage all Orthodox Christian women to join our organization as stewards.

Philoptochos is the backbone of Orthodox Philanthropy, the channel through which we can help our fellow men. Philoptochos is one of the most viable organizations in the Archdiocese, not only in our parish. It is one of the largest women’s Christian associations in the United States. Philoptochos offers so many opportunities to help in so many ways. Among the ways we offer assistance at the local, Metropolis and National levels are the following: Crisis intervention, disaster relief, parishioners’ financial needs, OCMC, IOCC, HC/HC, St. Basil Academy, Cancer Fund, UNICEF, Retired Clergy, Scholarships for Seminarians, Red Cross, Blankets, food for those in need, and countless other ways our Chapter helps in the community.  Even if you believe you don’t have the time to participate in the various projects of Philoptochos, YOUR Stewardship makes it possible for Philoptochos to support its many ministries. In Matthew 25: 45, Christ tells us, “Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.”    Please take a minute to complete the attached membership form.

On the first Saturday of Souls, Saturday, March 2, 2019 our chapter will participate in the Annual Metropolis of NJ Philoptochos visitation to St. Michaels Home for the Aged.  If you have interest in attending, please let Vaso Panagopoulos or Thea Portelos know.  Cars will be leaving the Church Parking lot at 8:30 am to arrive at St. Michaels for Liturgy beginning at 9:00 am.   We typically return to Paramus between 1:30 and 2:00 pm.

Philoptochos will be offering the first Lenten dinner on Kathara Deftera, after the services of Forgiveness on Monday March 11, 2019.  As typical of this time of year, we are in the midst of preparing for our Tricky Tray, which will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2019.  (Snow/Rain Date March 21. 2019)  As always we are seeking donations of “new” items to be raffled at the event.  We are accepting “new items” valued at $30 and over, as well as gift certificates, and cash to purchase gift items.  Please leave donations with a Philoptochos member or in the church office.

Looking ahead into the month of April, Philoptochos will be sponsoring our annual Tsoureki and Koulourakia Sale, pre-orders will be accepted for pick-up on Palm Sunday, April 21, 2019.   We will also be hosting the annual Palm Sunday, Lenten Luncheon, please save the date!

Once again Philoptochos is sponsoring our Annual Achievement Based Scholarship for $1000.00.  Graduating High School Seniors of the St. Athanasios Community are invited to apply.  An applicant with his/her family must be a member in good standing of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, Paramus, New Jersey.  Applications may be obtained by contacting Mrs. Rita Pavlou. Applications must be completed in their entirety and returned to Mrs. Pavlou, no later than May 1, 2019.

Our next Philoptochos meeting will be Tuesday, March 5, 2019.   We welcome your attendance.

As always, we thank you for your continued support.
